Justin Stoney, the Founder of New York Vocal Coaching, is an internationally-recognized Voice Teacher and Vocal Coach. One of the leading Voice Teachers in today’s music industry, he has appeared on the NBC Today Show, CBS, Fox News, Fox 5 New York, The Insider, and frequently as a guest on Huffington Post Live’s interviews of celebrity singers. His teaching has been featured in publications such as Esquire Magazine, Newsweek/The Daily Beast, SELF, NME, Fox News Magazine, Discovery News, Medical Daily, UK’s Daily Mail, Tech Times, and Backstage Magazine. Backstage readers also voted Mr. Stoney as one of New York City’s best Voice Teachers and Vocal Coaches.
Justin has taught as a master teacher of Pop/Rock/R&B and Musical Theatre for the NYSTA Comparative Vocal Pedagogy program, has been featured by the Learning Annex as a guest expert, was published as the Vocal Coach in residence for Voice Council Magazine, and has given master classes throughout the US and internationally. A born teacher, Justin has worked enthusiastically with a vast array of students - from beginning singers to celebrity clients, Broadway singers, and recording stars. Justin has worked with thousands of singers in New York and holds a strong reputation internationally, with private students from over 60 countries. Mr. Stoney has trained not only singers, but also other Voice Teachers from all over the world through the NYVC Voice Teacher Training & Certification program.
Justin’s pop/rock/R&B clients have reached #1 on Billboard Charts, have had international radio airplay, and have signed with major record labels including Universal, Sony, EMI, and Disney Records. Justin’s clients include recording artists, bands, celebrities, and singer/songwriters who have toured in the US and internationally. Contemporary artists have also appeared as finalists on The Voice, American Idol, and X-Factor after working with Justin.
Justin’s theatre clients, including Emmy-Winning and Tony-Nominated artists, have appeared in leading and ensemble roles in nearly every Broadway musical in the last decade. A few highlights include: Billy Elliot, Book of Mormon, Chicago, Legally Blonde, Lion King, Les Miserables, Mamma Mia, Phantom Of The Opera, Spring Awakening, Thoroughly Modern Millie, and Wicked. Aside from Broadway and Off-Broadway work, Justin’s clients have also appeared at the Lincoln Center, New York City Opera, London’s West End, and in several major motion pictures and network television shows.
Justin has coached performers toward winning their first Broadway roles, starting recording careers, receiving their first callbacks, getting cast in their first show, receiving their Equity card, solidifying representation with major talent agents and managers, getting into top music schools and universities, completing successful demo recordings and full-length albums, and working at almost every major regional theatre in the US. Voice Teachers he has trained have opened their own voice studios and taught in music schools and universities all across the world.
Justin is a member of NATS (National Association of Teachers of Singing), VASTA (Voice and Speech Trainer’s Association), The Voice Foundation, Actors Equity, and SAG-AFTRA. He is recognized as a Distinguished Voice Professional with NYSTA (New York Singing Teachers Association) and also serves on the Board of Directors for NYSTA. He is also certified in Yoga with a strong background in anatomy, Alexander Technique, and vocal science. Mr. Stoney collaborates with leading voice doctors and laryngologists to help bridge the gap between vocal pedagogy and voice medicine through New York Vocal Coaching’s relationship with Columbia University’s Voice and Swallowing Institute.
Justin and New York Vocal Coaching also hold relationships with several agents, managers, and casting directors in New York City and Los Angeles. NYVC receives numerous inquiries from record companies, TV/Film producers, theatre producers, casting agents, and music groups and bands seeking to audition new talent in New York and Los Angeles. Justin and the New York Vocal Coaching staff often assist students by providing industry counsel, as well as access to industry opportunities when appropriate.
Justin holds a BFA in Musical Theatre Performance and a BA in English from the University of Michigan, where he graduated at the top of his class and also was elected University Commencement Speaker. Justin studied classical vocal technique with veterans of the Metropolitan Opera, Musical Theatre vocal technique with veterans of Broadway, and contemporary vocal technique with industry-leading Pop/Rock/R&B instructors. Alongside vocal training, Justin has extensive formal training in Classical and Jazz piano. An accomplished musician, he plays the acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass guitar, mandolin, drums, and the Irish whistle.
Previous to his calling as a Voice Technician, Justin worked professionally as a Music Director. He has music directed Equity shows both in New York and regionally, as well as for soloists and cabaret acts in New York City. Notably, Justin teamed up with Bill Whelan (the composer of Riverdance) to compose and orchestrate original music for the Irish Repertory Theatre. Justin has also accompanied many professional singers to recording studios for music direction and coaching as well as to assist with the compositional, technical, and performance elements of the production process.
Mr. Stoney is devoted not just to training singers, but also to training and mentoring aspiring and experienced Voice Teachers. The NYVC Voice Teacher Training & Certification is helping Voice Teachers from around the world reach their fullest potential as pedagogues and teachers of singing.
